Nevisport was founded in 1970 by mountaineers Ian A Sykes MBE and Ian D Sutherland in the shadow of Ben Nevis, who were unhappy with the poor selection of mountaineering gear found in existing UK stores.
The two, who were active members of the Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team at the time, opened Nevisport's first store in Fort William, saving Sykes days at the RAF and the UK research team. Just four years later, the store had to move to a larger campus and, to cope with its success, it opened another store in Glasgow, becoming one of the leading foreign specialty retailers in the country.
